THE president of the International Bar Association, Fernando Pelaez-Pier, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, Robert French, and the Commonwealth Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, headline a list of guest speakers at the Australian Legal Convention, which opens tomorrow.
David Hodgkinson, special counsel at Clayton Utz, and Lee McIntosh, legal consultant at Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Western Australia, will each talk tomorrow on carbon trading in Australia, pinpointing legal problems and solutions associated with this area of law.
Damian Grave, a partner at Freehills' Melbourne office, will talk tomorrow afternoon about securities law, class action and recent developments in both Australia and the United States. Graham Leung, managing partner at Howards Lawyers in Fiji, will talk about the challenges to the rule of law in this region.
Steve Mark, the Legal Services Commissioner, will speak tomorrow afternoon on ethics in litigation and court proceedings. Kate Cook, from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia, will talk on the same topic.
Other speakers include Western Australian Supreme Court Chief Justice Wayne Martin, Western Australian Attorney-General Christian Porter and Law Society of Ireland Director-General Ken Murphy.
The inaugural Australian Young Lawyers Conference, catering to the nation’s up-and-coming legal practitioners, will be run in conjunction with the Convention.
